A man said to us, "Did you flee from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, Abu Ammarah?"He replied, "No, by Allah, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ did not turn away. Rather, it was the hasty ones among the people who turned back when Hawazin met them with arrows. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was upon his mule, with Abu Sufyan bin Harith bin Abdul-Muttalib holding its bridle, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was saying, 'I am the Prophet, this is no lie. I am the son of Abdul-Muttalib.'"
Sourced, agreed upon by Bukhari and Muslim. Bukhari narrated it in the Book of Jihad and Expeditions, chapter on the Prophet's ﷺ white mule, hadith no. 2874, and Muslim narrated it, hadith no. 1776/80, from the hadith of Yahya Qattan, with this wording. There is also a report on this topic from Ali, he is perhaps referring to the hadith in Ahmad, 1/86, 126, 156, and from Ibn Umar [to come, no. 1689].
