The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said that Jibreel descended upon him and said, "Give them," meaning his companions, "the choice concerning the captives of Badr, between killing them or accepting ransom, on the condition that an equal number of them will be killed next year."They said, "Ransom, even if some of us are killed."

[Its chain of transmission is daif] Nasai narrated it in Kubra, hadith no. 8662, from the hadith of Abu Dawud Hafari, through this route. Hisham bin Hassan transmitted it with "an" (an ambiguous form of narration).On this subject there is also a narration from Ibn Masud [to come at 1714 and 3084, with different wording, concerning the prisoners of Badr], from Anas [Ahmad 3/243, concerning ransom, with different wording], from Abu Barza [I did not find it], and from Jubayr bin Mutim [Ahmad 4/83, 85, with different wording].
