The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Whoever you find has stolen from the war spoils, burn his belongings."Salih said, I went in to see Maslama, and Salim bin Abdullah was with him. Maslama found a man who had stolen from the spoils, and Salim narrated this hadith to him. So Maslama ordered that the man's belongings be burned. A copy of the Quran was found among his belongings, so Salim said, "Sell this and give its price in charity."
