Yahya, and I believe also from Rafi bin Khadij, reported that the two of them said,Abdullah bin Sahl bin Zayd and Muhaysa bin Masud bin Zayd set out together until, when they reached Khaybar, they parted ways in one of its districts. Then Muhaysa found Abdullah bin Sahl murdered. He buried him and then came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ together with Huwaysa bin Masud and Abdul-Rahman bin Sahl. Abdul-Rahman, who was the youngest of the group, started to speak before his two companions.The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to him, "Let the elder speak first."So he fell silent, and his two companions spoke, after which he spoke along with them. They told the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about the killing of Abdullah bin Sahl.He said to them, "Will you swear fifty oaths so that you may claim the blood of your companion, or his killer?"They said, "How can we swear when we did not witness it?"He said, "Then the Jews will absolve themselves with fifty oaths."They said, "How can we accept the oaths of a people who are disbelievers?"When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saw this, he paid the blood-money himself.Hasan bin Ali al-Khallal narrated to us, Yazid bin Harun narrated to us, Yahya bin Saeed informed us, from Bashir bin Yasar, from Sahl bin Abu Hathma and Rafi bin Khadij, a hadith similar to this one in meaning.

يحيى وحسبت عن رافع بن خديج أنهما قالا خرج عبد الله بن سهل بن زيد ومحيصة بن مسعود بن زيد حتى إذا كانا بخيبر تفرقا في بعض ما هناك ثم إن محيصة وجد عبد الله بن سهل قتيلا قد قتل فدفنه ثم أقبل إلى رسول الله ﷺ هو وحويصة بن مسعود وعبد الرحمن بن سهل وكان أصغر القوم ذهب عبد الرحمن ليتكلم قبل صاحبيه قال له رسول الله ﷺ كبر للكبر فصمت وتكلم صاحباه ثم تكلم معهما فذكروا لرسول الله ﷺ مقتل عبد الله بن سهل فقال لهم أتحلفون خمسين يمينا فتستحقون صاحبكم أو قاتلكم قالوا وكيف نحلف ولم نشهد قال فتبرئكم يهود بخمسين يمينا قالوا وكيف نقبل أيمان قوم كفار فلما رأى ذلك رسول الله ﷺ أعطى عقله حدثنا الحسن بن علي الخلال حدثنا يزيد بن هارون أخبرنا يحيى بن سعيد عن بشير بن يسار عن سهل بن أبي حثمة ورافع بن خديج نحو هذا الحديث بمعناه
