I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, "Whoever is killed defending his property is a martyr, whoever is killed defending his religion is a martyr, whoever is killed defending his life is a martyr, and whoever is killed defending his family is a martyr."He said, this is a hasan sahih hadith. Several narrators have reported something similar from Ibrahim bin Saad. Yaqub is the son of Ibrahim bin Saad bin Ibrahim bin Abdul-Rahman bin Awf Zuhri.
حدثنا عبد بن حميد قال أخبرني يعقوب بن إبراهيم بن سعد حدثنا أبي عن أبيه عن أبي عبيدة بن محمد بن عمار بن ياسر عن طلحة بن عبد الله بن عوف
سمعت رسول الله ﷺ يقول من قتل دون ماله فهو شهيد ومن قتل دون دينه فهو شهيد ومن قتل دون دمه فهو شهيد ومن قتل دون أهله فهو شهيد قال هذا حديث حسن صحيح وهكذا روى غير واحد عن إبراهيم بن سعد نحو هذا ويعقوب هو ابن إبراهيم بن سعد بن إبراهيم بن عبد الرحمن بن عوف الزهري
[Its chain of transmission is sahih]Nasai also reported it, 7/116, hadith 4099, "Prohibition of Bloodshed," chapter, "Whoever fights to defend his family," through the hadith of Abu Ubayda bin Muhammad bin Ammar, following the same chain. Abu Dawud reported it, hadith 4772, and Ibn Majah, hadith 2580, through the hadith of Talha bin Abdullah, mentioned previously at 1418.
