A man was killed during the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and the killer was handed over to the victim's heir. The killer said, "Messenger of Allah, by Allah, I did not intend to kill him."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "If he is telling the truth and you kill him, you will enter the Fire."So the man let him go. He had been bound with a leather strap, and he went out dragging his strap behind him. From then on, he was called Dhu al-Nisah, the man of the strap.
حدثنا أبو كريب حدثنا أبو معاوية عن الأعمش عن أبي صالح
قتل رجل على عهد رسول الله ﷺ فدفع القاتل إلى وليه فقال القاتل يا رسول الله والله ما أردت قتله فقال رسول الله ﷺ أما إنه إن كان قوله صادقا فقتلته دخلت النار فخلى عنه الرجل قال وكان مكتوفا بنسعة قال فخرج يجر نسعته قال فكان يسمى ذا النسعة

Abu Dawud narrated it in the Book of Blood Money, chapter "The Ruler Ordering Pardon in a Case of Killing," no. 4498, and Nasai, no. 4726, and Ibn Majah, no. 2690, from the hadith of Abu Muawiya al-Darir with this wording. It has corroborating narrations in Muslim and Abu Dawud, nos. 4499–4501, and others.
