The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Allah made Makkah sacred, not the people. Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day must not shed blood in it, nor cut down its trees. If anyone seeks license by saying that it was made lawful for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, tell him that Allah made it lawful for me, not for the people, and it was made lawful for me only for an hour of one day. After that, it is sacred until the Day of Resurrection. Now, you people of Khuza, you have killed this man from Huzayl, and I shall pay his blood-money. But whoever has a relative killed after this day, his family has one of two choices, either they kill the killer or they accept the blood-money."
Its chain of transmission is sahih. Abu Dawud narrated it in the chapter on Blood Money, in the section "The Guardian of the Deceased Accepts Blood Money for Intentional Killing," hadith no. 4504, from the hadith of Yahya Qattan, with the same wording. Bukhari also narrated it, hadith no. 104, and Muslim, hadith no. 1354, from the hadith of Saeed Maqburi.
