The Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade us from a practice that was beneficial to us. Whenever any of us had land, we would lease it out for a portion of its produce or for a sum of dirhams. He said, "If any of you has land, let him grant its use to his brother or cultivate it himself."
حدثنا هناد حدثنا أبو بكر بن عياش عن أبي حصين عن مجاهد
نهانا رسول الله ﷺ عن أمر كان لنا نافعا إذا كانت لأحدنا أرض أن يعطيها ببعض خراجها أو بدراهم وقال إذا كانت لأحدكم أرض فليمنحها أخاه أو ليزرعها

Agreed upon by Bukhari and Muslim. Muslim narrated it in the Book of Business Transactions, chapter on land given for cultivation, hadith 1550, from the hadith of Fadl bin Musa, and Bukhari, hadith 2342, from the hadith of Amr bin Dinar with the same chain.There are also narrations on this topic from Zayd bin Thabit [Abu Dawud, hadith 3390 and others] and Jabir [Abu Dawud, hadith 3414, 3415].
