The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Clean earth is the means of purification for a Muslim, even if he does not find water for ten years. But when he finds water, let him touch it to his skin, for that is better."In Mahmud's version of the hadith, he said, "Clean earth is the ablution of a Muslim."
Takhrij. Hasan.Abu Dawud also narrated it in the Book of Purification, in the chapter on tayammum for one in a state of major ritual impurity, hadith no. 332, from Khalid Haddan with the same wording. Ibn Khuzayma graded it sahih (hadith no. 2292), as did Ibn Hibban in Al-Ihsan (1308–1310), Hakim (1/176–177), Dhahabi, and others. It has a corroborating witness in the hadith of Abu Hurairah .On this same topic there are also narrations from Abu Hurairah [Ahmad 2/278, 352], Abdullah bin Amr [Ahmad 2/225], and Imran bin Husayn [Bukhari, no. 348, and Muslim, no. 682].There is also the report of Ibn Masud [narrated by Bukhari (no. 345) and others], though whether it is rightly attributed as going back to the Prophet requires further examination.
