Anas bin Malik reported,

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came upon Hamza on the day of Uhud and stood over him. He saw that his body had been mutilated and said, "Were it not that Safiyya would be grieved, I would have left him so that the wild beasts and birds might devour him, until he would be resurrected on the Day of Judgment from their bellies."Then he called for a striped cloak and shrouded him in it. When it was drawn up over his head, his feet showed, and when it was drawn down over his feet, his head showed. The slain were many and the cloths were few, so a man, two men, or three were shrouded in a single garment, then buried together in one grave. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ would ask about them, "Which of them knew the most of the Quran?" and would place that one toward the qiblah. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ buried them and did not perform the funeral prayer over them.
