A man from the Ansar passed by with two camels used for irrigation while Muaz was leading the evening prayer, and Muaz had begun reciting Surah al-Baqarah. The man prayed briefly on his own and then left. When this reached the Prophet ﷺ, he said, "Are you a cause of trial, Muaz? Are you a cause of trial, Muaz? Why did you not recite Glorify the name of your Lord, the Most High, or By the sun and its brightness, or something similar?"
أخبرنا محمد بن بشار قال حدثنا عبد الرحمن قال حدثنا سفيان عن محارب بن دثار
مر رجل من الأنصار بناضحين على معاذ وهو يصلي المغرب فافتتح بسورة البقرة فصلى الرجل ثم ذهب فبلغ ذلك النبي ﷺ فقال أفتان يا معاذ أفتان يا معاذ ألا قرأت بسبح اسم ربك الأعلى والشمس وضحاها ونحوهما
Bukhari narrated it, adhan, chapter on one who complains about his imam when he prolongs [the prayer], hadith no. 705, from the hadith of Muharib through him. It is also in Al-Kubra, hadith no. 1056, and Ibn Mulaqqin graded it hasan in Tuhfat al-Muhtaj, hadith nos. 566–567.
