The Messenger of Allah ﷺ finished a prayer in which he had recited aloud and asked, "Did any of you recite along with me just now?"A man answered, "Yes, Messenger of Allah."He said, "I was wondering why I was being contended with in the Quran."So the people stopped reciting in the prayers in which the Messenger of Allah ﷺ recited aloud once they heard that.
أخبرنا قتيبة عن مالك عن ابن شهاب عن ابن أكيمة الليثي
أن رسول الله ﷺ انصرف من صلاة جهر فيها بالقراءة فقال هل قرأ معي أحد منكم آنفا قال رجل نعم يا رسول الله قال إني أقول ما لي أنازع القرآن قال فانتهى الناس عن القراءة فيما جهر فيه رسول الله ﷺ بالقراءة من الصلاة حين سمعوا ذلك
[sahih] Reported by Abu Dawud in Kitab al-Salah, chapter "Man raa al-qiraah idha lam yajhar", no. 826, and others narrated it from Malik through this route. It is also found in Muwatta (narration of Yahya) 1/86-87, and in Kubra, no. 991.
