We asked Ali about the prayer of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.He said, "Which of you can manage it?"We replied, "Even if we cannot manage it, we would still like to hear about it."He said, "When the sun was here, in the position it occupies here at the time of Asr, he would pray two rakahs. And when it was here, in the position it occupies here at the time of Zuhr, he would pray four rakahs. He would pray four rakahs before Zuhr and two after it, and he would pray four rakahs before Asr, separating each pair of rakahs with a salutation upon the angels brought near, the prophets, and those who follow them among the believers and the Muslims."
[Its chain is hasan] Tirmidhi reported it, in the Book of Prayer, chapter on how the Prophet ﷺ used to perform voluntary prayers during the day, no. 598, 599, from the hadith of Shubah, through this same chain, and he said, "Hasan." It is also found in Al-Kubra, no. 339, and this hadith has corroborating narrations.
