The Prophet ﷺ used to pray, between finishing the night prayer and dawn, eleven rakats. He would give the salam after every two rakats and pray witr with one. He would prostrate for as long as it would take one of you to recite fifty verses before raising his head. When the muadhin fell silent after the call to the dawn prayer and the dawn became clear to him, he would pray two light rakats, then lie down on his right side until the muadhin came to him with the iqamah, and he would go out with him. Some of the narrators add details beyond what others mention in the hadith.
أخبرنا أحمد بن عمرو بن السرح قال أنبأنا ابن وهب قال أخبرني ابن أبي ذئب ويونس وعمرو بن الحارث أن ابن شهاب أخبرهم عن عروة
كان النبي ﷺ يصلي فيما بين أن يفرغ من صلاة العشاء إلى الفجر إحدى عشرة ركعة يسلم بين كل ركعتين ويوتر بواحدة ويسجد سجدة قدر ما يقرأ أحدكم خمسين آية ثم يرفع رأسه فإذا سكت المؤذن من صلاة الفجر وتبين له الفجر ركع ركعتين خفيفتين ثم اضطجع على شقه الأيمن حتى يأتيه المؤذن بالإقامة فيخرج معه وبعضهم يزيد على بعض في الحديث
Muslim narrated it in "The Prayer of the Traveler," the chapter on the night prayer and the number of units of prayer the Prophet ﷺ performed at night, etc., hadith no. 736, from the hadith of Abdullah bin Wahb, in abridged form without mentioning Ibn Abu Dhib. Bukhari narrated it, hadith no. 994, from the hadith of Ibn Shihab, with the same wording. It is also found in Al-Kubra, hadith no. 1649.
