Sahl bin Saad reported,

A dispute broke out between two clans of the Ansar, and it escalated to the point that they were throwing stones at one another. The Prophet ﷺ went out to reconcile them, but the time for prayer arrived while he was still away. Bilal called the adhan and waited for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, but when he was delayed, Bilal called the iqamah and Abu Bakr رضي الله عنه stepped forward to lead the prayer. Then the Prophet ﷺ arrived while Abu Bakr was leading the people in prayer. When the people saw him, they began clapping. Abu Bakr would not normally turn around during prayer, but when he heard their clapping, he looked back and saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He intended to step back, but the Prophet ﷺ gestured to him to remain in his place. Abu Bakr رضي الله عنه raised his hands, then withdrew backwards, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ stepped forward and led the prayer. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ finished the prayer, he asked, "What kept you from staying in your place?"Abu Bakr replied, "It was not for the son of Abu Quhafa to lead the prayer in front of the Prophet of Allah."Then he turned to the people and said, "Why is it that whenever something happens during your prayer, you start clapping? Clapping is for women. Whoever notices something during his prayer should say, 'Subhan Allah.'"
