There were kings who came after Isa, son of Maryam, peace be upon him, who altered the Torah and the Gospel. Among their people were believers who recited the Torah. It was said to their kings, "We find no insult more severe than the insult these people direct at us. They recite, 'And whoever does not judge by what Allah has revealed, those are the disbelievers' [Maidah 5:44], along with other verses, and in their recitation they reproach us for our deeds. Summon them, and let them recite as we recite and believe as we believe."So he summoned them, gathered them together, and offered them the choice between being killed or abandoning the recitation of the Torah and the Gospel except for what had been altered. They said, "What do you want from this? Leave us alone."A group of them said, "Build us a pillar, then lift us up onto it, and give us something with which to hoist up our food and drink, and we will not bother you."Another group said, "Let us roam through the earth, wander aimlessly, and drink as wild animals drink. If you find us in your land, then kill us."Another group said, "Build us houses in the wilderness. We will dig wells, cultivate vegetables, and we will not bother you nor pass by you."There was no tribe that did not have a close relative among them. So they did this for them, and Allah revealed, "And monasticism which they invented, We did not prescribe it for them, only seeking the pleasure of Allah, but they did not observe it with due observance" [Hadid 57:27].Others said, "We will worship as so-and-so worships, and roam as so-and-so roamed, and take houses as so-and-so took." Yet they remained in their polytheism, having no knowledge of the faith of those they were imitating. When Allah sent the Prophet ﷺ and only a few of them remained, a man came down from his hermitage, a wanderer came back from his wandering, and the keeper of the monastery came out from his monastery. They believed in him and affirmed his truth. So Allah
said, "O you who have believed, fear Allah and believe in His Messenger, He will give you a double portion of His mercy" [Hadid 57:28], two rewards for their faith in Isa, in the Torah and the Gospel, and for their faith in Muhammad ﷺ and their affirmation of him. He continued, "and He will make for you a light by which you will walk" [Hadid 57:28], meaning the Quran and their following of the Prophet ﷺ. He said, "so that the People of the Book may know," who liken themselves to you, "that they have no power over anything of the bounty of Allah" [Hadid 57:29], the verse.
