The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Do not ask for a position of authority, for if you are given it because you asked, you will be left to handle it on your own, but if you are given it without having asked, you will be helped in carrying it out."
أخبرنا مجاهد بن موسى قال حدثنا إسمعيل عن يونس عن الحسن عن عبد الرحمن بن سمرة ح وأنبأنا عمرو بن علي قال حدثنا يحيى قال حدثنا ابن عون عن الحسن
قال رسول الله ﷺ لا تسأل الإمارة فإنك إن أعطيتها عن مسألة وكلت إليها وإن أعطيتها عن غير مسألة أعنت عليها
Bukhari transmitted it in Ahkam, chapter on whoever asks for a position of authority and is left to it, hadith no. 7147, and Muslim in Imarah, chapter on the prohibition of seeking a position of authority and being eager for it, hadith no. 13/1652, from the hadith of Yunus bin Ubayd, through the same chain, and it is in Kubra, hadith nos. 5929, 5930.
