A man from the Ansar came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, "Will you not appoint me to a position as you appointed so-and-so?"He replied, "After me you will see others preferred over you. Be patient until you meet me at the Pool."

أن رجلا من الأنصار جاء رسول الله ﷺ فقال ألا تستعملني كما استعملت فلانا قال إنكم ستلقون بعدي أثرة فاصبروا حتى تلقوني على الحوض
Muslim reported it in "Emirate," in the chapter "The Command to Show Patience When Rulers Are Unjust and Selfish," hadith no. 1845, from the hadith of Khalid bin Harith. Bukhari reported it in "Tribulations," in the chapter on the saying of the Prophet ﷺ, "You will see after me matters that you will disapprove of," hadith no. 7057, from the hadith of Shubah, with the same wording. It is also found in Kubra, hadith no. 5933.
