The Messenger of Allah ﷺ had a gold ring made for himself and used to wear it, turning the stone toward the inside of his palm. The people did the same. Then he sat upon the pulpit, removed the ring, and said, "I used to wear this ring with the stone facing inward." He threw it aside and said, "By Allah, I will never wear it again." So the people cast off their rings as well.
أخبرنا قتيبة قال حدثنا الليث عن نافع
أن رسول الله ﷺ اصطنع خاتما من ذهب وكان يلبسه فجعل فصه في باطن كفه فصنع الناس ثم إنه جلس على المنبر فنزعه وقال إني كنت ألبس هذا الخاتم وأجعل فصه من داخل فرمى به ثم قال والله لا ألبسه أبدا فنبذ الناس خواتيمهم
Bukhari narrated it in the Book of Oaths and Vows, chapter on one who swears about something even if he did not (actually) take the oath, hadith no. 6651, and Muslim narrated it in the Book of Clothing, chapter on the prohibition of gold rings for men, etc., hadith no. 2091, from Qutayba, through him.
