The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "The signs of hypocrisy are three. When he speaks, he lies. When he makes a promise, he breaks it. And when he is entrusted with something, he betrays the trust."
حدثنا علي بن حجر قال حدثنا إسمعيل قال حدثنا أبو سهيل نافع بن مالك بن أبي عامر عن أبيه
أن رسول الله ﷺ قال آية النفاق ثلاث إذا حدث كذب وإذا وعد أخلف وإذا اؤتمن خان
Bukhari included it in the Book of Faith, chapter on the signs of the hypocrite, hadith no. 33, and Muslim in the Book of Faith, chapter on the characteristics of the hypocrite, hadith no. 59, from the hadith of Ismail bin Jafar, with the same chain.
