Abdullah bin Umar reported,

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ cut off the hand of a thief for stealing a shield worth three dirhams.

Muslim narrated it in the Book of Legal Punishments, chapter "The punishment for theft and its minimum threshold," Hadith: 1686, from Qutayba. Bukhari narrated it in the Book of Legal Punishments, chapter "The saying of Allah Almighty, 'As for the thief, male or female, cut off their hands...' [Maidah 5:38], etc.," Hadith: 6795, from the hadith of Malik through this same chain. It is also found in Muwatta (Yahya's recension), 2/831, and in Kubra, Hadith: 7395.
