The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Whoever is killed in a blind brawl or a riot involving stones, whips, or sticks, the compensation for him is that of accidental killing. But whoever is killed deliberately, retaliation is due against the killer's hand. Whoever stands between the avenger and the killer, upon him is the curse of Allah, the angels, and all people. No obligatory or voluntary act will be accepted from him."
Its chain of transmission is sahih. Abu Dawud narrated it in the Book of Blood Money, chapter "Whoever Is Killed in a Blind Melee Among a People," no. 4540, from the hadith of Saeed bin Sulayman, with the same wording. It is also found in Kubra, no. 6992.
