We were with the Prophet ﷺ at a funeral when he asked, "Is anyone here from the clan of so-and-so?" He repeated this three times.A man then stood up.The Prophet ﷺ said to him, "What kept you from answering me the first two times? I only called out for you with good intent. So-and-so, a man from your clan, has died held captive by his debt."
أخبرنا محمود بن غيلان قال حدثنا عبد الرزاق قال حدثنا الثوري عن أبيه عن الشعبي عن سمعان
كنا مع النبي ﷺ في جنازة فقال أها هنا من بني فلان أحد ثلاثا فقام رجل فقال له النبي ﷺ ما منعك في المرتين الأوليين أن لا تكون أجبتني أما إني لم أنوه بك إلا بخير إن فلانا لرجل منهم مات مأسورا بدينه
[Its chain of transmission is daif]. Abu Dawud narrated it in the Sales chapter, section on the severity of debt, no. 3341, from the hadith of Saeed bin Masruq, from Thawri, with this wording, and it is also in al-Kubra, no. 6282. Samaan is trustworthy, and Bukhari said, "We do not know of Samaan having heard directly from Samura, nor of Shabi having heard directly from him, but if their direct hearing is established, then the hadith is sahih."
