Jabir bin Abdullah reported,

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ dispatched us as a force of three hundred riders under the command of Abu Ubayda bin Jarra to watch for a caravan of Quraysh. We stayed by the coast and were struck by severe hunger, so much that we ate kabath leaves.Then the sea cast out a creature called the ambergris whale, and we ate from it for half a month and oiled ourselves with its fat until our bodies regained their strength. Abu Ubayda took one of its ribs and looked for the tallest camel and the tallest man in the army, and the man rode the camel beneath the rib without touching it.Then they grew hungry, so a man slaughtered three camels. They grew hungry again, and he slaughtered three more. They grew hungry once more, and he slaughtered three more. Then Abu Ubayda forbade him from doing so.Sufyan said that Abu Zubayr reported from Jabir, "We asked the Prophet ﷺ about it, and he asked, 'Do you have any of it left with you?'"Jabir said, "We extracted from its eyes such-and-such number of jars of oil, and four men were able to fit inside the socket of its eye."Abu Ubayda had a leather bag containing dates, and he used to give us a handful each. Then it came down to a single date per man, and when we ran out of them, we felt their loss.

أخبرنا محمد بن منصور عن سفيان عن عمرو قال سمعت

جابرا يقول

بعثنا رسول الله ﷺ ثلاث مائة راكب أميرنا أبو عبيدة بن الجراح نرصد عير قريش فأقمنا بالساحل فأصابنا جوع شديد حتى أكلنا الخبط قال فألقى البحر دابة يقال لها العنبر فأكلنا منه نصف شهر وادهنا من ودكه فثابت أجسامنا وأخذ أبو عبيدة ضلعا من أضلاعه فنظر إلى أطول جمل وأطول رجل في الجيش فمر تحته ثم جاعوا فنحر رجل ثلاث جزائر ثم جاعوا فنحر رجل ثلاث جزائر ثم جاعوا فنحر رجل ثلاث جزائر ثم نهاه أبو عبيدة قال سفيان قال أبو الزبير عن جابر فسألنا النبي ﷺ فقال هل معكم منه شيء قال فأخرجنا من عينيه كذا وكذا قلة من ودك ونزل في حجاج عينه أربعة نفر وكان مع أبي عبيدة جراب فيه تمر فكان يعطينا القبضة ثم صار إلى التمرة فلما فقدناها وجدنا فقدها
