He caught a wild donkey and brought it to his companions, who were in the state of ihram while he himself was not. We ate some of it, then some of us said to others, "Let us ask the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about it." So we asked him, and he said, "You have done well." Then he asked us, "Do you have any of it left with you?"We said, "Yes."He said, "Send some of it to us as a gift."So we brought him some of it, and he ate from it while he was in the state of ihram.
أخبرنا محمد بن وهب قال حدثنا محمد بن سلمة قال حدثني أبو عبد الرحيم قال حدثني زيد بن أبي أنيسة عن أبي حازم عن ابن أبي قتادة عن أبيه
أصاب حمارا وحشيا فأتى به أصحابه وهم محرمون وهو حلال فأكلنا منه فقال بعضهم لبعض لو سألنا رسول الله ﷺ عنه فسألناه فقال قد أحسنتم فقال لنا هل معكم منه شيء قلنا نعم قال فاهدوا لنا فأتيناه منه فأكل منه وهو محرم

Bukhari narrated it in the Book of Gifts, chapter "Whoever requests a gift from his companions," hadith no. 2570, and Muslim in the Book of Hajj, chapter "Prohibition of hunting for one in the state of ihram," hadith no. 63/1196, from the hadith of Abu Hazim through this route, and it is also in Al-Kubra, hadith no. 4857.
