The letter of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was read to us, while I was a young boy, stating, "Do not make use of anything from a dead animal, neither its hide nor its sinews."
Graded hasan. Reported by Abu Dawud, Clothing, chapter on those who narrated that no benefit should be taken from the hide of a dead animal, no. 4127, from the hadith of Shuba by this route, and it is in al-Kubra, no. 4575. Tirmidhi graded it hasan, no. 1729, as did Bayhaqi, 1/18, and Ibn Hibban graded it sahih. Hakam bin Utayba explicitly stated that he heard it directly, as found in Ahmad, 4/311.
