While I was with Mutarrif at al-Mirbad, a man came in carrying a piece of leather. He said, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ wrote this for me. Can any of you read?"I said, "I can read."It contained the following, "From Muhammad the Prophet ﷺ to Banu Zuhayr bin Uqaysh. If they bear witness that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, separate themselves from the polytheists, and acknowledge the fifth due from their war spoils along with the Prophet's ﷺ share and his chosen portion, then they are granted the protection of Allah and His Messenger."
أخبرنا عمرو بن يحيى قال حدثنا محبوب قال أنبأنا أبو إسحق عن سعيد الجريري
بينا أنا مع مطرف بالمربد إذ دخل رجل معه قطعة أدم قال كتب لي هذه رسول الله ﷺ فهل أحد منكم يقرأ قال قلت أنا أقرأ فإذا فيها من محمد النبي ﷺ لبني زهير بن أقيش أنهم إن شهدوا أن لا إله إلا الله وأن محمدا رسول الله وفارقوا المشركين وأقروا بالخمس في غنائمهم وسهم النبي ﷺ وصفيه فإنهم آمنون بأمان الله ورسوله
[Sahih] Reported by Abu Dawud, no. 2999, from the hadith of Yazid bin Abdullah bin Shikhir through the same chain (see the previous hadith), and it is found in the supplement of Kitab as-Siyar by Fazari, no. 533. Ibn Jarud graded it sahih, no. 1099, as did Ibn Hibban, no. 949.
