During the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, we used to enter into sharecropping arrangements on land, leasing it out for a third or a quarter of the produce, or for a specified amount of food. One day, one of my paternal uncles came and said, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ has forbidden us from a practice that was beneficial to us, but obedience to Allah and His Messenger is more beneficial for us. He has forbidden us from entering sharecropping arrangements on land and leasing it for a third, a quarter, or a specified amount of food. He has instructed the owner of the land either to cultivate it himself or to have it cultivated, and he disapproved of leasing it or anything similar."Ayub did not hear this directly from Yala.
أخبرني زياد بن أيوب قال حدثنا ابن علية قال أنبأنا أيوب عن يعلى بن حكيم عن سليمان بن يسار
كنا نحاقل بالأرض على عهد رسول الله ﷺ فنكريها بالثلث والربع والطعام المسمى فجاء ذات يوم رجل من عمومتي فقال نهاني رسول الله ﷺ عن أمر كان لنا نافعا وطواعية الله ورسوله أنفع لنا نهانا أن نحاقل بالأرض ونكريها بالثلث والربع والطعام المسمى وأمر رب الأرض أن يزرعها أو يزرعها وكره كراءها وما سوى ذلك أيوب لم يسمعه من يعلى
Its takhrij, Muslim narrated it in the Book of Sales, in the chapter on renting land for produce, hadith 113/1548, from the hadith of Ismail bin Ulaya through this same chain, and it is in Sunan al-Kubra, hadith 4623. Bukhari also narrated it from the hadith of Rafi through this chain, as will come later, hadith 3929.
