The owners of farmlands during the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to lease out their fields in exchange for whatever crops grew along the irrigation channels. They came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and brought a dispute concerning some of these arrangements before him, so the Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade them from leasing on such terms and said, "Lease them out for gold and silver."Sulayman has also reported this hadith from Rafi, but he said, "from one of his paternal uncles."
أخبرنا عبيد الله بن سعد بن إبراهيم قال حدثني عمي قال حدثنا أبي عن محمد بن عكرمة عن محمد بن عبد الرحمن ابن لبيبة عن سعيد بن المسيب
كان أصحاب المزارع يكرون في زمان رسول الله ﷺ مزارعهم بما يكون على الساقي من الزرع فجاءوا رسول الله ﷺ فاختصموا في بعض ذلك فنهاهم رسول الله ﷺ أن يكروا بذلك وقال أكروا بالذهب والفضة وقد روى هذا الحديث سليمان عن رافع فقال عن رجل من عمومته
Its chain of transmission is daif. Abu Dawud narrated it in the Book of Business Transactions, Chapter on Sharecropping, hadith 3391, from the hadith of Ibrahim bin Saad, with the same wording. It is also found in al-Kubra, hadith 4622. This hadith has many corroborating narrations, see the previous hadith.Ubaydullah's paternal uncle is Yaqub bin Ibrahim bin Saad, and Muhammad bin Ikrima is Ibn Abdul-Rahman bin Harith bin Hisham, whom no one but Ibn Hibban graded as reliable.
