We used to be called brokers. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to us while we were selling and gave us a name better than ours. He said, "Merchants, this trade of yours involves swearing and lying, so mix your trading with charity."
[Sahih] Abu Dawud narrated it in "Trade" (al-Buyu), chapter on trade mixed with swearing oaths and idle talk, hadith no. 3327, from the hadith of Sufyan bin Uyayna, from Abdul-Malik bin Aayan and others, with this wording. Tirmidhi narrated it, hadith no. 1208, and said, "hasan sahih." It is also found in al-Kubra, hadith no. 4739. Ibn Jarud graded it sahih, hadith no. 557, as did Hakim, 2/5, and Dhahabi agreed with him.
