I fell gravely ill, to the point of nearly dying, so the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to visit me. I said, "Messenger of Allah, I have a great deal of wealth, and no one will inherit from me except my daughter. Should I give two-thirds of my wealth in charity?"He replied, "No."I asked, "Then half?"He replied, "No."I asked, "Then a third?"He said, "A third, and even a third is a lot. Leaving your heirs wealthy is better than leaving them destitute, begging from people."
Bukhari narrated it in the chapter of inheritance shares, chapter on the inheritance of daughters, hadith 6733, and Muslim narrated it in the chapter of bequests, chapter on bequeathing a third, hadith 1628, from the hadith of Sufyan bin Uyayna, transmitted through him. It is also in Kubra, hadith 6453.
