She had been married to a man from Banu Makhzum who divorced her three times. He set out on one of the military expeditions and instructed his agent to give her some maintenance, which she found insufficient. So she went to one of the wives of the Prophet ﷺ, and while she was there the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came in.The wife said, "Messenger of Allah, this is Fatimah bint Qays. So-and-so divorced her, then sent her some maintenance, which she returned, and he claims it was simply a favor on his part."He said, "He is telling the truth."The Prophet ﷺ then said, "Move to Umm Kulthum's house and observe your waiting period there."Then he said, "Umm Kulthum is a woman who has many visitors. Move instead to Abdullah Ibn Umm Maktum, for he is blind."So she moved to Abdullah's house and observed her waiting period there until it was complete. Then Abu al-Jahm and Muawiya bin Abu Sufyan proposed to her. She came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to seek his counsel concerning them.He said, "As for Abu al-Jahm, he is a man whose beating with the stick I fear for you. As for Muawiya, he is a man with no wealth."So she married Usama bin Zayd after that.
أخبرنا عبد الحميد بن محمد قال حدثنا مخلد قال حدثنا ابن جريج عن عطاء قال أخبرني عبد الرحمن بن عاصم أن

Hasan, except for the statement "Umm Kulthum," and the correct name is Umm Shariek, as mentioned previously, H: 3247. Ahmad also narrated it, 6/414, from the hadith of Ibn Jurayj with this wording, and he stated explicitly that he heard it directly. It is also in Al-Kubra, H: 5739.Abdul-Rahman bin Aasim bin Thabit was not deemed reliable by anyone except Ibn Hibban, and the hadith has corroborating narrations.
