Her husband went out in pursuit of some non-Arab slaves and they killed him. Shuba and Ibn Jurayj said that she was living in a remote dwelling, so she came along with her brother to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and they mentioned her situation to him. He granted her permission to move, but as she was leaving he called her back and said, "Stay in your house until the prescribed term reaches its end."
أخبرنا محمد بن العلاء قال حدثنا ابن إدريس عن شعبة وابن جريج ويحيى بن سعيد ومحمد بن إسحق عن سعد بن إسحق عن زينب بنت كعب
أن زوجها خرج في طلب أعلاج فقتلوه قال شعبة وابن جريج وكانت في دار قاصية فجاءت ومعها أخوها إلى رسول الله ﷺ فذكروا له فرخص لها حتى إذا رجعت دعاها فقال اجلسي في بيتك حتى يبلغ الكتاب أجله

[Its chain is sahih] Narrated by Abu Dawud, Divorce, chapter on the widow relocating, no. 2300, from the hadith of Saad bin Ishaq bin Kaab bin Ujra, with this wording. Tirmidhi (no. 1204) said it is hasan sahih, and it is also found in al-Kubra, no. 5722. It was graded sahih by Dhuhli, Hakim, and Dhahabi.
