Ayesha reported that the Prophet ﷺ used to stay with Zaynab and drink honey at her house. So Hafsa and I agreed that whichever of us the Prophet ﷺ came to should say, "I smell the odor of gum resin on you." He came to one of us, and she said that to him.He replied, "No, I drank honey at Zaynab's house." Then he said, "I will not have it again."So there was revealed, "Prophet, why do you forbid yourself what Allah has made lawful for you" [Tahrim 66:1], and "If you two turn in repentance to Allah" [Tahrim 66:4], referring to Ayesha and Hafsa, and "And when the Prophet confided a matter to one of his wives" [Tahrim 66:3], referring to his words, "No, I drank honey."All of this appears in the hadith of Ata.
أخبرنا قتيبة عن حجاج عن ابن جريج عن عطاء أنه سمع عبيد بن عمير قال
أن النبي ﷺ كان يمكث عند زينب ويشرب عندها عسلا فتواصيت وحفصة أيتنا ما دخل عليها النبي ﷺ فلتقل إني أجد منك ريح مغافير فدخل على إحديهما فقالت ذلك له فقال بل شربت عسلا عند زينب وقال لن أعود له فنزل {يا أيها النبي لم تحرم ما أحل الله لك} {إن تتوبا إلى الله} لعائشة وحفصة {وإذ أسر النبي إلى بعض أزواجه حديثا} لقوله بل شربت عسلا كله في حديث عطاء
Bukhari narrated it in the Book of Oaths and Vows, chapter, "When he forbids food to himself... etc.," hadith no. 6691, and Muslim in the Book of Divorce, chapter on the obligation of expiation upon one who forbids his wife to himself without intending divorce, hadith no. 1474, from the hadith of Hajjaj bin Muhammad, with the same chain, and it is found in Al-Kubra, hadith no. 5614.
