Abdullah bin Abbas reported,
A man came to him and said, "I have made my wife forbidden to me."He replied, "You have spoken falsely. She is not forbidden to you." Then he recited this verse, "Prophet, why do you forbid yourself what Allah has made lawful for you?" [Tahrim 66:1]. "Upon you is the most severe expiation, the freeing of a slave."

Sourcing, hasan. Bayhaqi narrated it (7/350, 351) from the hadith of Sufyan Thawri with this chain, and Muti bin Abdullah Ghazzal corroborated him, as recorded by Tabarani in Al-Kabir (11/440, no. 12246), and it is also in Al-Kubra, no. 5613.Makhlad is Ibn Yazid Harrani, and Salim is Ibn Ajlan Aftas. Hakim graded it sahih according to the standard of Bukhari (2/493, 494), and Dhahabi agreed with him. The hadith is found in the Sahihayn, in Bukhari, no. 4911, 5266, and Muslim, no. 1473/18, 19, but with different wording than this.
