The Prophet ﷺ said, "Whatever a woman is married for, whether a dowry, a gift, or something promised before the marriage contract is finalized, belongs to her. Whatever is given after the marriage contract is finalized belongs to whomever it was given to. The most deserving thing for which a man is honored is his daughter or his sister."The wording is that of Abdullah.
Its chain is hasan. Abu Dawud narrated it in the Book of Marriage, chapter on a man who consummates the marriage with his wife before paying her anything, hadith 2129, from the hadith of Ibn Jurayj, through the same route. It is also found in Al-Kubra, hadith 5509. Hajjaj is Ibn Muhammad.
