When her waiting period ended, Abu Bakr sent word to her proposing marriage on his own behalf, but she did not marry him. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent Umar bin Khattab to her proposing marriage on his behalf. She said, "Inform the Messenger of Allah ﷺ that I am a jealous woman, that I have young children, and that none of my guardians are present."Umar came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and conveyed this to him. He said, "Go back to her and tell her, as for your saying that you are a jealous woman, I will pray to Allah for you and your jealousy will be removed. As for your saying that you have young children, your children will be taken care of. And as for your saying that none of your guardians are present, none of your guardians, present or absent, would object to this."She said to her son, "Umar, get up and marry me to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ." So he married her to him. Abridged.
Its chain is hasan. Ahmad narrated it (6/295, 317) from Yazid bin Harun, with the same wording. The son of Umar bin Abu Salama's name is Saeed, as stated by Hakim and Dhahabi, though some scholars said it was Muhammad. Ibn Hibban mentioned him in Thiqat (5/363), and Hakim (4/16, 17) and Dhahabi both deemed him reliable. It has a corroborating narration in Sahih Muslim, no. 918, and elsewhere.
