We set out with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ thinking of nothing but the Hajj. When we reached Sarif, I began menstruating. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came in to see me while I was weeping. He asked, "What is the matter with you? Have your menses come?"I replied, "Yes."He said, "This is something Allah has decreed for the daughters of Adam. So perform all the rites that the pilgrim performs, except that you should not circumambulate the House."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sacrificed cows on behalf of his wives.
Bukhari narrated it in the Book of Menstruation, the chapter on ordering menstruating women when they enter the state of nifas, hadith 294, and Muslim in the Book of Hajj, etc., hadith 119/1211, from the hadith of Sufyan bin Uyayna, transmitted through him. It also appears in the chapter on explaining the major forms of ihram, hadith 283.
