When they were present with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in Medina, he would send the sacrificial animal ahead. Whoever wished entered into ihram, and whoever wished refrained.
أخبرنا قتيبة قال حدثنا الليث عن أبي الزبير
أنهم كانوا إذا كانوا حاضرين مع رسول الله ﷺ بالمدينة بعث بالهدي فمن شاء أحرم ومن شاء ترك
[Its chain of transmission is sahih] Ahmad narrated it, 3/350, from the hadith of Layth bin Saad, through the same chain, and it is in Kubra, hadith no. 3773.
