He used to give legal rulings permitting tamattu pilgrimage. A man said to him, "Hold back on some of your rulings, for you do not know what the Commander of the Faithful has since introduced regarding the rites." So I went to meet Umar and asked him about it.Umar said, "I know that the Prophet ﷺ did it, but I disliked the idea of men spending the night with their wives among the arak trees, then setting out for Hajj with their heads still dripping."
أخبرنا محمد بن المثنى ومحمد بن بشار واللفظ له قالا حدثنا محمد قال حدثنا شعبة عن الحكم عن عمارة بن عمير عن إبراهيم بن أبي موسى
أنه كان يفتي بالمتعة فقال له رجل رويدك ببعض فتياك فإنك لا تدري ما أحدث أمير المؤمنين في النسك بعد حتى لقيته فسألته فقال عمر قد علمت أن النبي ﷺ قد فعله ولكن كرهت أن يظلوا معرسين بهن في الأراك ثم يروحوا بالحج تقطر رءوسهم
Muslim narrated it, Hajj, chapter on the permissibility of conditional ihram, that is, entering ihram in the manner of the ihram of so-and-so, etc., no. 1222, from Muhammad bin Muthanna and Muhammad bin Bashshar, through the same, and it is in Kubra, no. 3715.
