A man said, "Messenger of Allah, my father is a very old man who cannot perform Hajj or Umrah, nor can he travel."He replied, "Then perform Hajj and Umrah on behalf of your father."

Sourcing, [Its chain of transmission is sahih] Abu Dawud reported it in the Rites of Hajj chapter, "A man performing hajj on behalf of someone else," no. 1810, and Tirmidhi, no. 930, and Ibn Majah, no. 2906, from the hadith of Shubah through this same route, and it is also in Sunan al-Kubra, no. 3600. Ibn Khuzayma graded it sahih, no. 3040, as did Ibn Hibban, no. 961, and Hakim, who said it met the conditions of the two Shaykhs, 1/381, and Dhahabi agreed with him. Ahmad bin Hanbal, may Allah have mercy on him, considered it strong.
