Whenever something was brought to the Prophet ﷺ, he would ask about it, "Is it a gift or charity?" If they said it was charity, he would not eat from it, but if they said it was a gift, he would extend his hand to receive it.
أخبرنا زياد بن أيوب قال حدثنا عبد الواحد بن واصل قال حدثنا
كان النبي ﷺ إذا أتي بشيء سأل عنه أهدية أم صدقة فإن قيل صدقة لم يأكل وإن قيل هدية بسط يده
Takhrij: 1, its isnad is hasan] Tirmidhi transmitted it in Zakat, the chapter on what has been mentioned regarding the dislike of charity for the Prophet ﷺ etc., hadith no. 656, from the hadith of Bahz through this route, and he said, "Hasan gharib." It is also found in Kubra, hadith no. 2395. It has a corroborating narration in Bukhari, hadith no. 2576, and elsewhere.
