The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Begging leaves scratches upon a man's face. Whoever wishes may scar his face with them, and whoever wishes may leave it, except when a man asks someone in authority or asks for something he cannot do without."
[Its isnad is sahih]. Abu Dawud narrated it in the Book of Zakat, chapter on the cases in which asking is permissible, hadith 1639, from the hadith of Shubah, with this same wording, and it is also in al-Kubra, hadith 2380. Tirmidhi said, hadith 2681, "hasan sahih," and Ibn Hibban graded it sahih, hadith 842, 843.
