A man asked, "Messenger of Allah, which charity is best?"He replied, "That you give in charity while you are healthy and stingy, hoping for long life and fearing poverty."

قال رجل يا رسول الله أي الصدقة أفضل قال أن تصدق وأنت صحيح شحيح تأمل العيش وتخشى الفقر
Sourced by Bukhari in the Book of Wills, chapter on charity at the time of death, hadith 2748, from the hadith of Sufyan Thawri, and by Muslim in the Book of Zakat, chapter on explaining that the best charity is the charity of the healthy person who is stingy with wealth, hadith 1032, from the hadith of Umara through the same route. It is also found in al-Kubra, hadith 2322.
