The Messenger of Allah ﷺ, while speaking about charity and refraining from begging, said, "The upper hand is better than the lower hand. The upper hand is the one that gives, and the lower hand is the one that asks."
أخبرنا قتيبة عن مالك عن نافع
أن رسول الله ﷺ قال وهو يذكر الصدقة والتعفف عن المسألة اليد العليا خير من اليد السفلى واليد العليا المنفقة واليد السفلى السائلة
Narrated by Muslim, in the Book of Zakat, chapter on the statement that the upper hand is better than the lower hand, etc., hadith no. 1033, from Qutayba, and by Bukhari, in the Book of Zakat, chapter, There is no charity except from surplus wealth, hadith no. 1429, from the same hadith, no. 2312, with the same wording. It is also found in Muwatta (Yahya's recension), 2/998, and in Kubra of Malik.
