Awf bin Malik reported,
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ went out with a staff in his hand, and someone had hung up a cluster of poor-quality dates as charity. He began poking at the cluster with the staff and said, "Had the owner of this charity wished, he could have given something better than this. The owner of this charity will be eating spoiled dates on the Day of Resurrection."

عن عوف بن مالك قال
خرج رسول الله ﷺ وبيده عصا وقد علق رجل قنو حشف فجعل يطعن في ذلك القنو فقال لو شاء رب هذه الصدقة تصدق بأطيب من هذا إن رب هذه الصدقة يأكل حشفا يوم القيامة
, "And do not aim toward the defective therefrom, spending from that", "And do not aim toward the defective therefrom, spending from that"Its chain is hasan. Abu Dawud narrated it in the chapter on zakat, in the section on what is not permissible to give in charity from produce, hadith no. 1608, and Ibn Majah in the chapter on zakat, in the section on the prohibition of giving the worst of one's property in charity, hadith no. 1821, from the hadith of Yahya bin Saeed Qattan, with this wording. It is also found in Kubra, hadith no. 2272. Ibn Khuzayma graded it sahih, hadith no. 2467, as did Ibn Hibban, hadith no. 837, and Hakim, 4/425–426, and Dhahabi.
