The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to him, "Fast one day, and you will have the reward of the remaining days."He said, "I am capable of more than that."The Prophet said, "Fast two days, and you will have the reward of the remaining days."He said, "I am capable of more than that."The Prophet said, "Fast three days, and you will have the reward of the remaining days."He said, "I am capable of more than that."The Prophet said, "Fast four days, and you will have the reward of the remaining days."He said, "I am capable of more than that."The Prophet said, "Then fast the most excellent of fasts in the sight of Allah, the fast of Dawud . He used to fast one day and break his fast the next."
أخبرنا محمد بن المثنى قال حدثنا محمد قال حدثنا شعبة عن زياد بن فياض سمعت أبا عياض يحدث
أن رسول الله ﷺ قال له صم يوما ولك أجر ما بقي قال إني أطيق أكثر من ذلك قال صم يومين ولك أجر ما بقي قال إني أطيق أكثر من ذلك قال صم ثلاثة أيام ولك أجر ما بقي قال إني أطيق أكثر من ذلك قال صم أربعة أيام ولك أجر ما بقي قال إني أطيق أكثر من ذلك قال صم أفضل الصيام عند الله صوم داود عليه السلام كان يصوم يوما ويفطر يوما
etc, hadith: 1159. Ikhraj: Muslim narrated it in the Book of Fasting, chapter on the prohibition of fasting continuously for one who is harmed by it, 192, from Muhammad bin Muthanna, through the same route, and it is in al-Kubra, hadith: 2702.* Muhammad is Ibn Jafar, whose nickname was Ghundar.
