The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came by once and asked, "Do you have anything to eat?"Ayesha replied, "I have nothing."He said, "Then I am fasting."Later he came by again, and by then someone had given us a gift of hays, so I brought it out and he ate from it. I was surprised at this and said, "Messenger of Allah, you came in earlier fasting, and now you have eaten hays?"He said, "Yes, Ayesha. The one who fasts outside of Ramadan, not as a make-up for Ramadan but as a voluntary fast, is like a man who sets aside charity from his wealth. He gives away whatever portion of it he wishes and lets that go through, and he holds back whatever remains and keeps it for himself."
