The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to encourage people to stand in prayer during Ramadan, without commanding them to do so as a binding obligation. He would say, "Whoever stands in prayer during Ramadan out of faith and seeking reward, his previous sins will be forgiven."
أخبرنا محمد بن جبلة قال حدثنا المعافى قال حدثنا موسى عن إسحق بن راشد عن الزهري قال أخبرني عروة بن الزبير أن
أن رسول الله ﷺ كان يرغب الناس في قيام رمضان من غير أن يأمرهم بعزيمة أمر فيه فيقول من قام رمضان إيمانا واحتسابا غفر له ما تقدم من ذنبه
Bukhari narrated it, no. 924, and Muslim, no. 761, from the hadith of Zuhri with this same chain but not this wording. It is also found in al-Kubra, no. 2502. The hadith has corroborating narrations. Musa is Ibn Ayun.
