We were forbidden in the Quran to ask the Prophet ﷺ about anything, so it used to please us when an intelligent man from the bedouins would come and question him.A man from the bedouins came and said, "Muhammad, your messenger came to us and informed us that you claim Allah has sent you."He replied, "He spoke the truth."The man asked, "Who created the sky?"He answered, "Allah."The man asked, "Who created the earth?"He answered, "Allah."The man asked, "Who set up the mountains in it?"He answered, "Allah."The man asked, "Who placed in it the things that benefit us?"He answered, "Allah."The man said, "By the One who created the sky and the earth, set up the mountains in it, and placed in it the things that benefit us, has Allah truly sent you?"He replied, "Yes."The man said, "Your messenger claimed that we are obligated to perform five prayers every day and night."He replied, "He spoke the truth."The man asked, "By the One who sent you, has Allah truly commanded you with this?"He replied, "Yes."The man said, "Your messenger claimed that we are obligated to give zakat from our wealth."He replied, "He spoke the truth."The man asked, "By the One who sent you, has Allah truly commanded you with this?"He replied, "Yes."The man said, "Your messenger claimed that we are obligated to fast the month of Ramadan every year."He replied, "He spoke the truth."The man asked, "By the One who sent you, has Allah truly commanded you with this?"He replied, "Yes."The man said, "Your messenger claimed that we are obligated to perform the pilgrimage, whoever is able to find a way to it."He replied, "He spoke the truth."The man asked, "By the One who sent you, has Allah truly commanded you with this?"He replied, "Yes."The man said, "By the One who sent you with the truth, I will not add anything to these, nor will I diminish anything from them."When he turned away, the Prophet ﷺ said, "If he spoke truthfully, he will surely enter Paradise."
Bukhari narrated it in the Book of Knowledge, Chapter on What Has Been Said Concerning Knowledge, hadith 63, as a suspended narration, and Muslim narrated it in the Book of Faith, Chapter on Asking About the Pillars of Islam, hadith 12, from the hadith of Sulayman bin Mughira through this same chain, and it is found in al-Kubra, hadith 2401.
